Succop Named Draddy Semifinalist

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. Established to honor former NFF Chairman Vincent dePaul Draddy, a Manhattan College quarterback who developed the Izod and Lacoste brands, the award comes with a 25-pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.

"The Draddy Trophy is one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards," said NFF Chairman Archie Manning whose sons Peyton (Draddy winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. "It recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership, and we're incredibly proud to select the next winner from this remarkable group of semifinalists."

Succop does it again!

Former Red Tornado star Ryan Succop has been the most reliable member of the 2008 South Carolina Gamecocks football team. In recognition for his efforts in last Saturday's victory over the University of Alabama-Birmingham Ryan has been selected the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

This is Ryan's third time to be named SEC Player of the Week. The other two times were following South Carolina's victory over Mississippi State in 2006 and Georgia in 2007. The Ol' Ball Coach will be sorry to see Ryan go, that's for sure!

Great job, Mr. Succop!

Another tough loss for the Scarlet Knights!

Well, Rutgers is now 0-2 for the season and unfortunately for the Knights both losses have been on ESPN. The good news is that San San Te did his job well tonight! San San was 2-for-2 tonight, booting field goals of 34 and 32 yards. The rest of the team wasn't nearly as good. Final score: 44-12, Tar Heels.

GOOD JOB SAN SAN!

Shelton, Sewanee open season with road win

The Sewanee Tigers opened their 2008 season in Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster College Blue Jays. The result was a 26-14 victory. Quarterback Patrick Shelton was 8-15-0 for 84 yards. He also had a net of six yards rushing, including a touchdown on a 4-yard keeper. For the game summary, click here. The Tigers have their home opener this Saturday when they host Washington & Lee.

San San gets mentioned in press conference

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano gave his usual Monday game-week press conference yesterday and was asked specifically to comment on the performance of kicker San San Te in the 24-7 loss to Fresno State on Labor Day. In his first-ever start for the Big East team, San San was 0-2 on his field goal attempts but did successfully kick the extra point following Rutgers' only touchdown.

“San San had one bad kick, the other one was a bad snap. Jeremy Ito, who is one of the more storied kickers in our history, had a few bad kicks his first game. I have seen enough of San San in practice, and I’ve seen the way he works and prepares, and I just believe in him. The worst thing you can do is beat somebody down. I know that San San didn’t go out there and say ‘let me overkick this one and shank it to the left.' He will be fine.”
Coach, you are correct!

Rutgers will host the Tar Heels of UNC this Thursday on ESPN. Gametime should be approximately 7:30.

Austin Johnson vs. the UCLA Bruins in the Rose Bowl tonight!

One year ago Austin Johnson was taking the field at Frank Barger Stadium to open the season against the Statesville Greyhounds. Tonight at 8:00 PM EST he will take the field at Pasadena's historic Rose Bowl to face the UCLA Bruins. What a difference a year makes!

Austin is currently the 2nd-team fullback on the Volunteer depth chart (pdf format), a position he won in spring practice and maintained throughout the pre-season. Two weeks ago he suffered an ankle sprain in a scrimmage but has since recovered from it sufficiently to make the traveling squad. He should definitely see action tonight.

Why oh why do former Hickory players keep going to Georgia's rivals? But I am so happy to see a former Tornado and all-around great kid getting to do his thing on national television. If it has to be for the Gamecocks and Volunteers, then so be it. But I would love to see a former Tornado wearing the Red & Black of the Mighty Ones from Athens someday soon!

BEST OF LUCK BRUISER, TONIGHT AND THROUGHOUT THE SEASON!

HHS Alumni Update #5: SAN SAN TE

San San Te (Class of '07) will make his first start as the placekicker for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights today when they take on the Fresno State Bulldogs on national television (4:00 PM EST on ESPN).

San San, who was one of the nation's best high school kickers during his senior season, will be one of three former Red Tornadoes to play on national television this extended weekend. Ryan Succop was successful on Thursday night against NC State. Austin Johnson plays later tonight in the Rose Bowl against UCLA.

HHS Alumni Update #4: Patrick Shelton

There is a definite sense of optimism on the campus of The University of the South this August. With 49 returners in better shape than they were a year ago and a record 43 freshmen from 17 states expected to produce some immediate results, the Tigers expect to turn some of their losses in 2007's 1-8 record into victories this year. The players have chosen the motto “finish” for the coming season.

A crucial element to any improvement this season is the return of Hickory's own Patrick Shelton at quarterback. Patrick won the job early last season and went 98-of-176 for 1,119 yards and six touchdowns. He also netted 106 yards rushing on 65 carries. The success of Sewanee's new pro-style offense will rest largely on his shoulders. At 6'1, 215 pounds Shelton has certainly been busy in the off-season preparing to lead his team.

"Last year I began by splitting time and ended up starting the last six games of the year," said Shelton. "We are intending to throw the ball more this year and I am hoping to complete over 60% of my passes and improve my efficiency rating from 111.25.

"Stats are nice," Shelton added. "But the real goal is to win games, and in order to do so we will need to score more points. I hope to put my team in a better position to do that this year. With an experienced corps of receivers coming back I feel that we could develop into a very potent passing attack."

Head coach Robert Black is pleased with the conditioning of his returning players and is confident that the hard work will pay off. He feels that the team should be more comfortable with the pro-style offense it used the last part of the 2007 season, focusing on high-percentage passes, but will keep the option game available as a change-of-pace.

5 QUESTIONS FOR PATRICK SHELTON

1. What is your major? What career are you interested in pursuing after you graduate?
"I am majoring in Economics with an interest in Sports administration and management."
2. How would you assess the level of play in Division III football, particularly in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference?
"The level of play in Division III has dramatically increased over the years due to a larger pool of talent throughout the country. The SCAC is a very prestigious conference that sends competitive teams to the playoffs every year. One member, Trinity University, played for the Division III National Championship a couple of years back and thet are annually ranked in the Top 25. It's small college football but it's still college football."
3. Who else is in the SCAC?
"Conference members include Colorado College, Trinity University and Austin College in Texas, Depauw University in Indiana, Centre College in Kentucky, Millsaps College in Mississippi, Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama, and along with Sewanee in Tennessee is Rhodes College, which is in Memphis.
4. What is your favorite memory of playing football at Hickory High?
"Beating Maiden and Bandys in “thrillers” my senior season in front of capacity crowds were two of my favorite sports moments as they helped us wrap up the school’s first conference title in over five years. Also, just being able to play under the lights with friends that I grew up with was special."
5. What advice would you offer your brother Kevin as he enters his senior season at Hickory?
"I would offer Kevin a lot of advice but most importantly just to have fun and enjoy it because it’s once in a lifetime. There is nothing like high school football. I would love to get to play just one more game for HHS. I wish him all the best and hope he leads his team to an outstanding and unforgettable season."
Sewanee opens its season September 6th on the road at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.
