One year ago Austin Johnson was taking the field at Frank Barger Stadium to open the season against the Statesville Greyhounds. Tonight at 8:00 PM EST he will take the field at Pasadena's historic Rose Bowl to face the UCLA Bruins. What a difference a year makes!
Austin is currently the 2nd-team fullback on the Volunteer depth chart (pdf format), a position he won in spring practice and maintained throughout the pre-season. Two weeks ago he suffered an ankle sprain in a scrimmage but has since recovered from it sufficiently to make the traveling squad. He should definitely see action tonight.
Why oh why do former Hickory players keep going to Georgia's rivals? But I am so happy to see a former Tornado and all-around great kid getting to do his thing on national television. If it has to be for the Gamecocks and Volunteers, then so be it. But I would love to see a former Tornado wearing the Red & Black of the Mighty Ones from Athens someday soon!
BEST OF LUCK BRUISER, TONIGHT AND THROUGHOUT THE SEASON!
